Striking bracts grow from the centre of the plant and can be red, yellow, orange or deep purple depending on the species. Leaves are thin and dark green. They cause no injury to their host plant but just use them for support. The leaves come together to form a star shape in the middle. What is commonly mistaken as the flower on the plant is actually a grouping of modified leaves, called bracts.

Planting And Care
Bromeliad require low light and should be kept out of direct sunlight. Because these are tropical plants, they benefit from high humidity.A light mist daily will keep your Bromeliad looking its best.
Bromeliad Care
The Bromeliada plant can also be grown in a container and is known as a prized house plant in areas outside of its native region.
Use plant containers and potting medium that is porous, allowing adequate air circulation and fast drainage.
You can purchase potting mix specifically designed for bromeliads or you can mix your own using ingredients such as peat moss, vermiculite, and bark.
Root rot can be avoided with proper watering techniques. Be sure to let the potting mix dry before adding more water.
Also note that Bromeliad is tend to be top heavy. You may need to anchor your container with heavy rock in the bottom to prevent your plant from toppling.
